What are crowns?

A crown is a ceramic cap that Dr. Sebastian bonds on top of a severely damaged or decaying tooth. The crown envelopes the enamel, preventing additional damage while restoring your tooth’s shape, size, and appearance.

A crown can also be an entire artificial tooth mounted on an artificial tooth root called an implant.

Ceramic crowns look and reflect light just like your natural teeth. Plus, they blend in with your smile, ensuring no one knows you have dental restorations.

Why are dental crowns necessary?

At Dentistry With A Smile Inc., Dr. Sebastian uses ceramic crowns to:

  • Protect weak and decaying teeth
  • Support teeth with large fillings
  • Cover broken or severely worn down teeth
  • Cover dental implants
  • Complete root canal therapy
  • Replace an entire missing tooth

Dr. Sebastian also uses crowns to cover stained and severely discolored teeth that don’t improve with in-office Zoom!® teeth whitening.

What does getting crowns involve?

At Dentistry With A Smile Inc., getting a ceramic crown takes two visits several weeks apart.

During your first visit, Dr. Sebastian reviews your dental records, completes an oral exam, and takes digital X-rays to check the extent of the damage or decay. Then, she numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and uses hand-held tools to remove the compromised tooth enamel.

Dr. Sebastian takes impressions of your prepared tooth and sends them to a dental lab. She then covers your tooth with a temporary crown to protect it.

When the dental lab completes your custom crown, you return to Dentistry With A Smile Inc. Dr. Sebastian administers a local anesthetic, replaces your temporary crown with the permanent one, and checks your bite. She then cleans your teeth and explains how to keep your crown in good condition.

How long do ceramic crowns last?

Ceramic crowns typically last 12-15 years*, but you can extend their use by taking good care of your teeth. Dr. Sebastian recommends brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting Dentistry With A Smile Inc. every six months for preventive dentistry.

You can reduce the risk of chips, cracks, and other damage by avoiding bad habits, like nail biting or opening packaging with your teeth. Dr. Sebastian suggests wearing a mouthguard if you grind your teeth or play contact sports.

Call Dentistry With A Smile Inc. or use the online booking feature today to see if ceramic crowns are right for you.
